My Responsibilities as Teacher
It is my responsibility to do my part to help each student succeed in reaching their musical goals. I will provide a professional atmosphere where true learning can be kindled and a love for music can blossom. I help my beginner students learn to understand and read music, understand their instrument, develop healthy practice habits, and provide a safe environment for learning to prosper. For my Intermediate students, I expand on the same principles listed above, however, the music will become a little more difficult and the expectations will be raised.
No matter the student's level, I will provide a positive and fun atmosphere where learning will happen and beautiful music will be made! I may follow a curriculum, but I tailor each of my lessons to my student's individual needs. I care greatly about my students and am only successful when they are successful.
Dependent on skill level, each of my students will be required to participate in a number of various performance opportunities. At these recitals, all parents and any guests can be invited. These recitals are beneficial to a student in various ways. They provide a very tangible goal to work towards as well as allow the student to share their hard work with others. Younger (age or skill level) students will be able to see more Intermediate students perform and have a "where I'll be" moment. Parents, family, and guests will have the opportunity to focus only on the student and the music they're making.
Student Responsibilities
Each of my students will have certain expectations I will be looking for during and between lessons. First and foremost, I will expect each student to own and use their own instrument. I can guide you to smart options, whether they be online or local, for where to purchase your instrument. You will also be expected to supply yourself with required books and supplies for your lessons.
I expect my students to practice. I adhere to the saying that "practice makes perfect." The student's skill level will determine the amount of time they should schedule to practice, which will be determined on a student-by-student basis.
Each student is also expected to arrive at lessons on time, with their instruments ready, and all of their required books. In private music lessons for strings, "on time" means more than showing up when the lesson begins. It takes a few minutes to prep an instrument. For example, if your lesson begins at 10 am Saturday morning, please arrive at 9:55 to set up your instrument. If I'm attending a house call, please begin your set-up at 9:55. This allows tuning to begin right when the lesson starts.
Be attentive during lessons. I have a "no phone" policy unless it's an absolute emergency. This goes for all ages. Your time during a lesson is short, and it will go by faster than you think, especially if you are attentive for the full duration. Because of this, please refrain from becoming distracted.
Have fun! There will be moments where frustration will occur, where headaches will happen, and when your body will ache (yes, playing the violin is a rather physical activity). This is part of the process of learning. HOWEVER, it is my job to make the most of this, or why else would you hire me? Learning an instrument is fun! We will have fun! We will laugh, we will joke, and we will most definitely be silly. All while not detracting from your lesson. Yes, I will push, but I will do so with a reassuring smile. Remember, I was in your shoes too. I was once a beginner. I know how it feels and I can empathize. This will be tough, but it will be oh so worth it.
Parental Responsibilities
If you are a parent or guardian to one of my students, you are also encouraged to take part in your child's musical journey. For each of the expectations listed above, I hope that I will have your support in seeing them happen—especially helping with practicing and lesson promptness. Depending on your child's skill level, this may require your assistance during practice sessions. For young children(up to age 7), sit down daily with your child and help them through the process. For older students (7 to 9), find time once a week to help them practice. This also allows your child a moment to play for others, preparing them for their future recitals.
You are welcome to attend private lessons with your child, however, I ask that this only be the case if your child can remain attentive. It can sometimes be a double-edged sword with children, especially younger children, when parents are present. However, know that your attendance is not off-limits. I never want you to feel left out of the journey. If you need time to gain my trust, I totally understand.
You are encouraged to provide your child with opportunities to listen to classical music. Whether it be live or online, exposure to great music will be extremely beneficial for your child. If you need suggestions on where to go or what to listen to, please feel free to ask.
